Dr. Jennifer Henderson
Staff Clinical Psychologist at the Washington Anxiety Center of Capitol Hill
Dr. Henderson is a licensed clinical psychologist. She earned her PhD in clinical psychology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. She is a member of the Rome Foundation and the American Association of Pain Psychology.
Using a positive and solutions-focused approach in working with clients, Dr. Henderson tailors her integrative treatment to fit each client's unique strengths and challenges. Towards that end, she has received extensive clinical training in such evidenced based treatments as Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT).
Dr. Henderson works with adolescent and adult clients via teletherapy. She has a particular passion for helping those struggling with anxiety and phobias, post traumatic stress disorder (including chronic trauma), chronic pain, and health concerns like long haul COVID. Additionally, she provides couples therapy using EFCT. EFCT is an evidence-based treatment focused on addressing negative interactional cycles within relationships to help partners reconnect in a healthy and loving way.
She is a genuine, engaging, and pragmatic psychologist who strongly believes in the importance of bringing our true selves into therapy. She focuses on empowering her clients while providing them a safe space for their growth and change. With her clients' recovery goals in mind, Dr. Henderson helps her clients navigate the obstacles that have been keeping them stuck while still holding each accountable for the change they seek.
She sees herself as a guide and secure partner with whom her clients can safely explore new ways of engaging with the world.
"Most people turn to therapy when they've been hurting for far too long and have lost hope in feeling better. My job is to help shine a light in the darkness, helping people better understand themselves and understand what's keeping them unhappy. My goal is to help empower people to better manage life's stressors, cultivate meaning, and rediscover joy."
Before joining our practice, Dr. Henderson worked at a Washington state psychiatric hospital as well as in private practice. She served nearly 15 years in the U.S. Air Force. She is a mother to two children (one in elementary school and the other in high school) and has been married to her college sweetheart for over 20 years. She loves being outdoors, playing video games with her children, and snuggling next to her daughter watching scary movies.
Dr. Henderson is licensed in Washington DC and the state of Washington. She also has an active Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) authorization granted by the PSYPACT Commission, allowing her to see clients via telehealth in more than 30 states including Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
